Eagles edge Cascades in Honda tournament final
The Northwest University Eagles (NAIA) defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (Canada West-CIS) 86-81 on Saturday to capture the first annual Honda Way basketball tournament.
The Cascades beat Guelph 94-76 to earn their way into the title game, and came out strong against the Eagles. UFV held an eight point lead after one quarter, and led by six at half-time. But the third quarter was the Cascades undoing as they were outscored by 19 points.
UFV came to within five points in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as they got against the stingy Northwest squad.
The Cascades were led by Coquitlam’s Sam Freeman, who turned in a 24 point performance. James York (Richland, WA), Jasper Moedt (Abbotsford) and Sheldon Bjorgaard, (Abbotsford) each added 10 points. Surrey’s Kyle Grewal led all Cascades with 12 total rebounds.
