Drivers, taxpayers should welcome traffic cameras
Am replying to C. Punt’s letter of May 17th. I totally disagree with your intrusion argument, regarding traffic cameras. Drivers cannot be trusted to drive safely and responsibly on the roads today. Only yesterday I witnessed a Chevy Lumina weaving erratically behind another vehicle eastbound on Luckakuck in the 50 km/h zone near the Evans overpass. Cameras will pick this up and dangerous, risk taking drivers dealt with.
Yes, there are many CCTV cameras in Europe and for good reason. They should not bother us if we have nothing to hide. A recent good example to acknowledge, are cameras at the Royal Oak Skytrain station. They recorded the two men fleeing from Cassie Campbell after they stole her iPad. One has already been arrested and the other one is well known to police.
I am sure that readers would like nothing better than for ICBC and private insurers to lower premiums on car insurance, but that is not going to happen until tailgating, cell phone talking, speeding, “intrusive” drivers are discouraged by cameras. Not a dangerous intrusion but common sense that will ultimately save lives, reduce accidents and lower insurance premiums which we would all like to see.
