Student aid not helping

I come from a single parent household and work part-time right now while in school in order to try and help support my mother with paying for everything it takes for a single mother to raise two children on her own. My mother works in retail which means that she does not even make that much money to begin with but she still tries her best to support us and encourage us to get an education. She has no money to help us pay for this education because she can barely make enough money to pay her own bills without being able to afford to pay ours as well.

I decided as a teenager that my life was going to be different from hers. I was going to get an education and go somewhere in life without the constant struggles that she faces.

I have previously completed the Dental Assisting program in 2005 and was on the Dean’s List of Students and in the Top Five in the class. I have just completed fall semester at UCFV taking some of the courses that I need to get into the Dental Hygienist program and I did very well in all these courses, I achieved Bs, As and A+s in all of my courses.

I recently applied to receive student loans from StudentAid BC and had done so in the year 2005 as well. I was sent a letter at the beginning of December stating that I was being audited by this company and subsequently had to go get estimates on my car and my job earnings from 2005 until now which was not a problem but after I completed this process, I was sent another letter stating that I am not eligible to receive funding and that I even had to pay back most of the previous funding that I received due to them saying that it was over award.

This is ridiculous to me because when reviewing my audit, they didn’t even take into account the fact that I have my own bills to pay each month and the fact that I help out my mother with payments to her every month as well.

I cannot afford to fund my own education and now I basically will have to give up on my dream because of the negligence of this company that is supposed to be helping young people like me get an education.

I understand that there are people who probably take advantage of this system by not repaying their loans, etc. but I am definitely not one of these people.

I just find it very sad that this company has all power over me and my ability to go to school. I think people should think twice before trying to borrow loans from StudentAid BC because they are apparently not there to help young people as we would think they are.
