Winifred Mary Young passed away peacefully at age 98 years after a brief stay in Chilliwack Hospital. Born in Yorkshire, England on August 27, 1906, Winifred McLaurie came to Canada in 1929 and after meeting Maxwell Taylor Young, married him in 1934. In 1942 they moved to the Chilliwack area.
She was predeceased by her sister Kathleen, brother Jim, son David James Maxwell in 1965, her husband Max in 1980, and her son-in-law Chris Dyble in 2001.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Joyce Dyble and Karen Hipwell; son-in-law Bill Hipwell; grandchildren John Dyble (Barbara), David Dyble (Margôt), Kathleen Brett (Richard), Jill Scott, James Hipwell (Sharon), and Jim Hipwell (Diane); great grandchildren Todd (Connie), Sarah, Adam, Chad, Shannon, Devon, Ryan, Heather, Jennifer, Justine, and Mark; and in England, nephew Rob McLaurie and niece Sue Crocker (Roger).
The family would like to thank her doctors and nurses at Chilliwack Hospital and to mention how much she thought of the very caring staff and all her friends at the Lynnwood. She always had a word of encouragement, a zest for living and an abiding love of family.
She spanned the century but was very much aware of the changes. Denied further schooling as a teen because of her sex, she and Max always encouraged her family to seek higher education. She appreciated the arts and was an avid painter. She was a gifted seamstress and loved to travel and read.
A Memorial Service will be held at Carman United Church, 7258 Vedder Rd., Chilliwack on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004 at 1:30 pm.
