Wendell Richard Leslie TOEWS

April 28, 2004

May 4, 1942-April 28, 2004

It is with great sorrow that the family of Wendell Toews announces his passing on April 28, 2004 at Whitehorse General Hospital in the Yukon Territory, due to a massive heart attack. Wendell was 61 years of age.

Wendell was born May 4, 1942 in Chilliwack to parents Jake and Emma Toews. A short time later the family moved to Vancouver for several years before returning to Chilliwack. Wendell received all his education in Chilliwack. One of the jobs he had while still in Chilliwack was for the Fire Station on the Army Base in Vedder. He remained in Chilliwack until the call of the ‘great white north’ lured him away to dawson City. Wendell fell in love with the Yukon and also for a local lady by the name of Katie Taylor. Wendell accepted the roll of husband to Katie and father to Katie’s six sons. Wendell worked on the gold dredges and later was employed with the City of Dawson as a foreman for public works. He worked until poor health forced him into early retirement.

Wendell was predeceased by his mother in 1990; his father in 1996; and his brother Rodger in 1972. Also Katie’s four sons, Teddy, Dave, Marvin, and Daryl.

Left to mourn his passing are his brother Vic (Irene) Toews; two nephews, Tyler (Jen) Toews, and Gord Toews; one niece Crystal Bury and her son Kyle Bury. Also a paternal aunt and uncle, Len and Betty Peters, all of Chilliwack. In Dawson City, those mourning our loss are Katie Taylor and two sons, Ed and Gerald, as well as numerous other relatives in B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Yukon.

Funeral took place in Dawson City on May 4, 2004. Wendell will remain in the Yukon which he loved and will be interned in the Dawson City Cemetery. Heritage Funeral Home in Whitehorse in care of arrangements.

Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chilliwack Salvation Army would be appreciated.
