Robert Gordon WALKER

Robert Gordon Walker died peacefully in Agassiz, BC on October 29, 2012.

Bob was born in North Vancouver, BC, in 1929. He graduated from North Vancouver High School in 1947, and from an early age; was an avid hunter and fisherman.

At age 16, Bob was an Air Cadet 111 Pegasus Squadron in Vancouver. His teenage summers were savoured learning animal husbandry at Canada’s largest private cattle ranch, Douglas Lake Ranch. Under the direction of Colonel Victor Spencer, Bob raised several Canadian Champion Hereford Bulls. Bob also worked at Spencer’s Meat Department in downtown Vancouver as a butcher, then n 1949, he joined the BC Telephone Company (Telus) advancing for 38 years until his retirement in 1987. In his early years, Bob stretched telephone lines across many different communities such as Terrace, Hazelton, Haida Gwaii, Hope, and Chilliwack. He was one of the first on scene after the largest landslide ever recorded in Canada in the Nicolum Valley, in 1965 (The Hope Slide).

Bob excelled in every hobby he chose; winning Provincial awards in bowling, swimming, skeet shooting, public speaking, and even his famous blackberry wine! In retirement he also enjoyed racquet ball, skiing, and sailing. He was a life-time member of the North Vancouver Gun Club, Chilliwack Gun Club, Custer Sportsman’s Club in Washington State, and the Chilliwack YMCA. He co-started the Chilliwack YMCA bingo fundraising campaign in 1987; it continues to successfully raise funds supporting local youth, adult, and seniors’ programs. Bob was a testament of one who unselfishly assisted others. The family thanks friends and neighbours who honoured and cherished his friendship.

Bob was predeceased by his loving mother Eleanor Walker in 1997. He is survived by three sons Robert, Daniel, Steven, and his daughter Sheryl (Kevin); four grandsons, a grand-daughter, one great-grandson, and cousins.
