Oscar GIESLER

Oscar Giesler late of Chilliwack passed away August 28, 2006 in Chilliwack at the age of 86.

He was born June 12, 1920 in Mathildendorf, Rumania to Friedrich and Sara Giesler in a farming community near the Black Sea. In 1940 all the German speaking residents were forced to flee as Rumania had been given to the Russians. In 1941 he was conscripted into the German Army where he served 2 years before being captured. In 1943 he spent the next six years in Russia P.O.W. Camp and was released in 1949 and went back to Germany and in 1951 he emigrated to Canada. He married Wilma Krause in 1952 and in 1953 they purchased Orion Bowman’s farm on Promontory and worked in the sawmill. In 1954 he became a full time dairy farmer on the hill. He was active, even until his eighties, helping out on the Chilliwack River Road farm that was purchased in 1993 as Promontory became residential.

A Service of Remembrance will be held in the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Kevin Pentland officiating. Cremation, Henderson’s Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Wilma; son, Dennis (Mary); 5 grandchildren and 3 sisters.

Should family and friends so desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon.
