John Schellenberg

December 28, 1916 - July 22, 2017


The Lord’s call for John came July 22, 2017 where his spirit obediently responded. He was surrounded by the love of his family as he made his way on his final journey home. John lived a 100 years as a faithful servant of the Lord. He is predeceased by his parents Peter and Maria Schellenberg, his loving wife Kay and four sisters and four brothers-in-law. John was born in Herbert, SK on December 28, 1916, where he attended school and like many in this time helped with the farm to ensure the necessities of living were sustained. John enjoyed attending school and advanced very quickly through the grades, however the depression hit in the early 30’s and he was required to find work to help with the family and got his first job in 1932 working with his granddad threshing on a farm. In 1936 John decided to attend Bible School for a year and in 1937 he moved to Alberta, John returned to Herbert, SK, and in 1938 he returned to Bible School and worked on the Thiessen farm. It was in the early 40’s several of his friends decided to get married, John prayed for a wife and that the Lord would guide him in a special way. It was not long after that Kay Dyck was introduced to him and on April 20, 1941 John and Kay were married, they enjoyed 71 years of marriage. John and Kay moved to Yarrow, BC in November 1941 and made a home there till 1976 when they moved to Chilliwack. John worked in the hop fields, in saw mills and he and Kay took on managing Cheam Village in 1983 till 2007, when they retired. They continued to live at Cheam Village and enjoyed the friends they made. John will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Vi (Bill) Dyble, two grandchildren Arlene (Al) Warris, Wayne (Geraldine) Dyble and five great grandchildren; Larissa (Clint) Peters, Jessica Dyble, Shelby, Riley and Zachary Warris and great-great grandson Jackson Peters. His sister Helen (Bob) Mynott, brother Eldo Schellenberg, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, friends and his coffee partners. A memorial service will be held at Broadway Mennonite Brethen Church on July 29, 2017 at 2pm, in lieu of flowers a donation to the Fire Victims at the Red Cross.
