John (Jack) Joseph McCARTEN

August 8, 2004

John (Jack) Joseph McCarten passed away August 8, 2004 at Chilliwack General Hospital.

Survived by his wife Betty Sylvia, thus ending a 62 year union. Also survived by son Michael (Rosemary) of Burnaby; daughter Sheila Mitchell (John) of Victoria; grandsons, Brian Mitchell (Kerri) of Victoria, and Ian Mitchell (Kristin) of Calgary, Alta.; sister Margaret Pescott of Langley; and several nieces and nephews.

Born March 2, 1919 at Bow Island, Alta., Jack went overseas and served in the Armed Forces until the end of the Second World War. Following his return to Canada, with his wife Betty Sylvia, whom he met and married in England, they settled in Medicine Hat, Alta. He relocated his family to Chilliwack in 1956.

Jack was a civilian worker at DND for several years, later he became self-employed in his carpet and flooring business until 1971 when his eyesight began to fail.

A quiet and positive man, he had a natural talent for working with hardwood. He built several boats, made furniture, etc. He spent much time in his workshop. His power tools were seldom still, he especially liked working with his wood turning lathe. He was a unique craftsman and his family treasures all the things he made for them over the years.

There will be no funeral service as by request of the deceased. A memorial will be arranged at a later date.

Those wishing to make donations in Jack’s name, can do so to the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C.

Those we love go out of sight,

But never out of mind.

They are cherished in the hearts,

Of those they leave behind.
