Born in Winnipeg March 8, 1924 Irene passed away peacefully in Chilliwack at Valley Haven Guest Home July 4, 2009.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1982, her son Kenneth in 1986 and grandson Adam in 2008.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by three sons Darryl (Darlene) of Chilliwack, Earl of Quesnel and Gregory of Calgary; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Benjamin), Carli (Gabriel), Daniel (Tina) and Jason (Lindsay); four great-grandchildren: Jade, Wesley, Frankie and Taylor as well as numerous friends and acquaintances.

As veterans, both Irene and Walter were immensely proud of their service during WW II. Irene, serving with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps met Walter, serving with the RCN, while travelling on a troop train for leave at their respective hometowns in 1944.

They married in Vancouver in 1947 and enjoyed over 35 years together before moving to Chilliwack, where Walter passed away shortly thereafter. While raising her family in Vancouver, Irene was a member of the Renfrew United Church, worked part time at both the church and BC Hydro and was actively involved on a voluntary basis with the Cerebral Palsy Association and as a Girl Guide Leader. Irene continued her volunteer work after moving to Chilliwack with both the Golden Y’s and the Seniors Resource Society where she was instrumental in publishing the Seniors Newsletter, attended several conferences and participated in operating innumerable bingos and bake sales.

Irene was eventually elected to executive status and recognized several times for her contribution of time and effort.

Irene’s life will be celebrated at her son and daughter-in-law’s (Darlene and Darryl) home on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 2:00 PM. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

Irene’s family would appreciate that any donations you wish to make on her behalf be sent to Canuck Place in Vancouver.
