Helen Ruth (Howie) LORIMER

Helen Lorimer passed away on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 at the Chemainus Health Care Centre with her son, Stephen, at her side.

Helen was born on July 26, 1917, the first of seven children to William and Ruth Howie in Beebe Plain, Vermont. She married a Canadian, Ellsworth Lorimer, in 1939 and shortly afterward, they moved to BC where Ellsworth was stationed at the Ladner Air Force Base during the Second World War. They settled in Chilliwack where they raised their four children and became involved in church and community including activities benefiting persons with mental handicaps. Helen was the first teacher assistant hired by School District 33 and worked in this capacity for several years. In January 1994, Helen and Ellsworth moved to a suite in their daughter, Ruth’s home in Surrey. In March 2003, Helen moved to the Chemainus Health Care Centre, close to her son, Stephen. Helen’s commitment to Jesus Christ and her family are her lasting legacy.

Helen is survived by her children: Ruth (Willi) Haukenfrers, Wetaskiwin, AB, Janice (Robert) Orr, Grande Prairie, AB, Stephen (JoAnn) Lorimer, Chemainus, BC, and Anne Lorimer (caregiver, Margaret O’Hara), Chilliwack, BC. Also eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, her brothers, Clarence, Arthur, Donald, and Robert Howie, her sister, Dorothy Lecka, and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Ellsworth, on April 10, 2003, her mother in 1935, her father in 1964, and her sister, Grace, in 1957.

Viewing at Henderson’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Burial at Little Mountain Cemeteries on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. followed by a celebration service in the chapel at Chilliwack Alliance Church at 1 p.m. All are welcome. Tea to follow.
