It is with sadness that we make note of the passing of our dear mother, Gladys Clara Gibbs (nee Thorpe), 1921~2009. She passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Gladys was born in Essex, England. A strong faith in a God who protected her, stayed with her throughout her life. She lived through heavy bombing and many serious illnesses and was talented, caring, resilient and confident. Her favourite Psalm, # 23, said “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me and your rod and staff protect and comfort me”. Also Psalm 27 & 33.
In her youth, she was offered an apprenticeship in a design house which was a great honour and only offered to a select few skilled workers. She was denied attendance due to her parent’s ignorance and greed. Many difficult experiences in her life caused deep heartache for her but her intelligence and faith helped her cope. Her life was not an easy one. During WWII, she met and married Austin Gibbs. She moved to P.E.I. as a war bride with her new daughter, Kathleen. Challenges of this rough country life were many for this city girl. Some funny and some much too difficult to face… yet she did. Some of her challenges helped her to be the deeply loving person and wonderful mother we knew. Her son, Ian was born before leaving P.E.I. and in future years, she lived in B.C, Sask. (where daughter Sherry Lee was born), Manitoba and Quebec. Stories of when she and our father owned a restaurant and served “late night” hamburgers and hot dogs to young hungry cadets on the Vedder Army Base were amazing to hear. She was an extremely hard worker in her life, industrious, creative and an excellent cook! Her favourite job was when she worked for Sears. Things she loved were her family, dear friends, chin-wags with neighbours, gardening, knitting, decorating and dreaming…and especially reading late into the night!
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Edward) Thomas and Sherry (Kevin) Fraser; grandchildren, Scot Thomas, Thomas Fraser, Tyrel Fraser, Adrienne Peterson and Teresa Domer; and great grandchildren, James and Benjamin Peterson. She was predeceased by her husband Austin Gibbs and son Ian Gibbs. A private family graveside is what she preferred. We honour her wishes.
Dear Mother, we will miss your mentoring and kind ways and we dearly hope and pray you are at peace now. May you never feel guilty again for unfinished work… may you stay up late with a good strong cup of tea, a great book and the company of someone you loved. You are in the loving arms of God. “God is the Father who is full of mercy and comfort” 2 Corinthians 1-3. From our hearts to yours… you will be missed. We love you!
