Geraldine Flora Gowen passed away quietly at Chilliwack General Hospital on December 31, 2009 at the age of 88 years. Widowed in 1949, she moved to Chilliwack from Longview, Washington and in 1950 met and married Charles “Chuck” Gowen and together with her two sons, Paul and Brent Abernethy, started a new and rewarding life. A third son, Scott Gowen, was born in 1954. One of her delights was music. She had a gorgeous voice and loved to play the piano. To her, a house without a piano was not a home and she took a great delight in playing and singing – by herself or, even better, with others. For most of her adult life, she was a regular in the Chilliwack United Church choir, even appearing occasionally as a soloist. Geraldine was born in 1921 in Virden, Manitoba, the youngest in a family of 5 girls and 1 boy. She is survived by her husband, Chuck, her three sons and daughter-in-law, Carol, as well as four grandsons, Joram (Jackie), Joe, Graeme (Gina), Philip, granddaughter Lauren, and three great-grandchildren, Joey, Jayden, and Emile - all were the love of her life. She is also survived by her sole remaining sister, Isobel Boyd of Sardis. Her numerous friends and relatives feel blessed to have spent so many wonderful years with her company and all will miss her dearly. The family wish to extend special thanks to the staff of Nursing Unit 3 for their tender and professional care. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home, Chilliwack. Flowers gratefully declined.
