Frederick Kenneth WINN

Frederick Kenneth Winn was born August 7, 1917 in Regina, SK. He passed away April 17, 2004 at McIntosh Lodge, Chilliwack, B.C.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Muriel; daughters, Judith Fitzsimmons (Bob, Rob, Cheryl, Chris and Denise) of Chilliwack; Susan (Rick and Sam) of Surrey; Margaret Fullerton (Derek, Andy and Jessie) of Prince George; son, Ken (Lynne, Michael and Laura) of Kelowna; sister-in-law, Lu Reid and Ralph of London, ON; and two great-grandchildren, Caitlyn and Joshua Fitzsimmons.

Fred was a dedicated Legionnaire. After going through all positions at Branch and Zone level, he was elected an Executive Officer BC, Yukon Command, going up to Provincial President in 1985.

In 1990, he was elected Dominion Command Vice-President. Fred was the recipient of several awards for his work for seniors, particularly Veterans Life Member, Royal Canadian Legion; Canada Volunteer Award Federal Department of Health & Welfare and the Legions Meritorious Medal and Palm Leaf.

Fred was Chairman, Board of Directors Shaughnessy Hospital, and a Charter member of George Derby Long Term Care Society & Veterans Memorial Manor.

In 1936, when jobs were hard to get, Fred worked his way on a cattle train boat to England, where he joined the Royal Air Force. He was sent to the Middle East as a Wireless Operator and in 1943 he returned to Canada. He transferred to the RCAF in 1944 and received his discharge in 1945.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff at McIntosh Lodge for all their loving care.

A Legion Memorial Service will be held at Branch 280, 5661 Vedder Road, Sardis, BC, on Thursday, May 6, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC, Yukon, 1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, would be greatly appreciated.
