Era Balakshin passed away on Monday, May 28th, 2012 at Chilliwack, B.C. at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her four children, Alex (Carol), Michael (Lebby), Bill (Janice) and Betty (Rene); her ten grandchildren Elvira, Sarah (Chris), Sheila (Cory), Laura (Matt), Julia, Andrew, Jim, Tom, Mike and Christine as well as three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Nicholas, her sister Nina, and her brother George.
Era was born in Manchuria, China on Feb. 5, 1920. In 1925, she immigrated to Calgary, Alberta with her Russian parents, brother and sister. She was a school teacher in rural Alberta and Burnaby. Era married Nick in 1944 and settled in Chilliwack where she remained for the rest of her life. She was a longtime member of the Davis Ford Circle. She especially enjoyed organizing family gatherings on the farm.
A memorial service to honour her life will be held on Monday, June 4th at 1:00 pm from the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901 Victoria Ave. in Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, memorial donations may be made in her name to the B.C. Children’s Hospital or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
