Ellen Cynthia McAMMOND

December 18, 2005

Ellen Cynthia McAmmond went peacefully into the arms of Jesus December 18, 2005.  Born in Stalwart, Saskatchewan, January 30, 1915, she began working at the age of 15.  One of her jobs took her to Rosetown, Saskatchewan, where she met and married Ernest McAmmond in November, 1937.

They homesteaded near Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan for a few years before returning to Rosetown. They later purchased a farm near Herschel, Saskatchewan, where they lived until their retirement. Ellen (or Nellie to many) worked hard to make a success of the farm.  She planted large gardens to feed her family and raised thousands of turkeys to sell at Christmas.  Her lawn and trees were always neat and trim with a beautiful flower garden to brighten the yard. She also worked alongside her husband on the farm helping with harvest, going for machinery parts, fixing this or that, and lending a hand wherever possible. Ellen was gracious and hospitable.  Her door was always open to anyone who needed a meal or a bed.  Whether they be family, friends, or strangers, all were made to feel welcome and at home.

She committed her life to the Lord at eighteen years of age, and both she and Ernie served Him faithfully through the years.  Her desire was to see all her loved ones come to know Jesus Christ as their Saviour and to this end she prayed daily. In the early 1970’s she and Ernie began traveling to Roma Texas during the winter months to work in the mission there.  She enjoyed teaching English to the Mexican people and quickly grew to love them like a second family. For the past ten years she had lived in Chilliwack, B.C. close to her daughter and attended First Avenue Christian Assembly.  She made many dear friends there and at the Garden Villa giving and receiving much love and care.

She was predeceased by her husband Ernie, her parents John and Christian Hignett, brother’s Walter, Harry and Stan, and sister’s Mae, Chrissie, Winnie, and Mattie. Lovingly remembering her are daughters Ruth (Harvey) Shankland, Jean-Ellen (Chuck) Clements, sons Ken (Barb), Bernie (Ev), Barry (Sharon), and Phil (Joy), 14 grandchildren, 30 great- grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, one brother Cliff (Joyce) Hignett, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Thursday, December 22 at North West Pentecostal Assembly 9949-169 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta at 2:00 pm. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Vedder View Gardens Chilliwack B.C.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at First Avenue Pentecostal Assembly, Chilliwack, BC Wednesday, December 28 at 2:00 pm. Donations may be made in Ellen’s honour to The Gideons or 100 Huntley Street.
