Elizabeth (Betty) Peters

December 31, 1926 – July 11, 2017

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our most loved and cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a woman of faith and found peace and comfort in her relationship with the Lord. Surrounded by the love of her family, Betty passed away peacefully at the age of ninety. Born in Lowe Farm, MB, she moved with her family to Chilliwack, BC when she was six years old. She attended Chilliwack Central School and Chilliwack High School. Betty started working at a young age and had jobs all around town – at the dry cleaners, Coca-Cola plant and the Coqualeetza Hospital. With the energy of her youth, at the end of a hard day of work, Betty and her friend Marie would ride their bikes up to Cultus Lake for a swim, and then all the way home again. Betty met the love of her life at a post-war dance. Len and Betty married on June 14, 1947. Theirs was a lifelong love affair. Betty dedicated her life to the care and comfort of her loved ones. She was devoted to her husband, Len. He never left the house without a perfectly ironed shirt. Family was everything to her. She and Len raised four children and were foster parents to many. Betty loved to socialize. She took pleasure in walking around a gathering and speaking to everyone there. Betty opened her home to friends and family and enjoyed entertaining. She was a good cook and we have many fond memories of her cream puffs and apple fritters. She was generous with what she had and everyone was welcome. She was very touched by the outpouring of love from friends and family when Len passed away earlier this year. Betty was an artist. She loved to paint and was a member of the Golden Palette Club. We will treasure her paintings for years to come. She was a gifted seamstress and could create anything from quilts to winter coats, wedding dresses and clothes for the whole family. Len and Betty were long-time members of the Canadian Order of Foresters and Betty was active in Court Lady Cheam. They formed life-long friendships there and attended many social gatherings. They worked to raise a great deal of money for BC medical charities and the family has fond memories of attending Christmas parties at the old hall. Beloved wife of the late Len Peters; loving mother of Lorraine Peters, Greg Peters (Wilma), Ken Peters (Yvonne) and Cynthia Woodward (Mark); dear grandmother of Geoff Peters (April Wozny), Amy Hunter (Tom), Aaron Peters (Brandi Harrison), Laura Sak (David) and Rachel Peters and great-grandmother to Matilda Hunter and Melia Sak. Betty was predeceased in death by her parents, Jacob Toews and Elizabeth (Gerbrandt) Toews; her sister Margaret; her brothers Peter and Jake; and her son-in-law Colin Lipscomb. The family wishes to express our deep appreciation to the nursing staff on 4 North at Chilliwack General Hospital for the respectful and compassionate care provided to Betty at the end of her life. Our thanks to Dr. Ian Kishi for his many years as Betty’s family doctor. Thanks also to the staff of the Lynnwood Retirement Residence and to the many friends and extended family members who helped us care for Betty over the last few years. A private family interment will be held. A memorial service will take place at Chilliwack Alliance Church on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 1:30 pm, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, if so wished, donations may be made to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
