Betty Lou Young (nee Moore)

May 14, 1932 - September 22, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Lou Young (nee Moore) on September 22, 2017.

Betty was born to Harold and Melina (Nell) Moore on May 14, 1932, in Calgary, Alberta. The family moved to the Kerrisdale area of Vancouver when Betty was an infant. They remained there during her growing-up years.  Her hobbies during this time included roller skating, baseball and bowling. She amassed many trophies from these sports.

She married her husband Jim Young on June 5, 1954. Sons Ted and Bob came along in 1955 and 1959.

Betty worked at Mackie Parts in the 50's, Woodward's Oakridge in the 60's and 70's, and Sears Chilliwack, until she retired in the late 90's.

During this time Betty was also involved as a tour guide and bus driver. Her work in tourism demanded great organization and people-skills, which she excelled at.

Betty and Jim moved to Columbia Valley in 1975 where they built a home and a place that became a summer getaway for family members. Betty loved animals and worked very hard on their hobby farm that included rabbits, horses, veal calves, etc.  In 1990, Jim and Betty moved to Sardis and retired to a simpler life.

Betty loved baking cookies, pies, pastries, and candies. Her freezer was well-stocked with meat pies and other delectable treats.  If you visited around Christmas, you were sure to leave with a bag of Almond Roca (which tasted better than anything store-bought). Sunday dinners and Holidays were wonderful events. Their table was laden with delicious food and desserts. Betty loved her family and enjoyed making each person feel like a special guest by preparing their very own favourite pie for dessert.

Her husband Jim passed quietly at home in July of 2015. Betty's health declined quickly after this. After falling and fracturing her hip, it became necessary to consider moving Betty to a Care Facility where she would be better attended. Her stay at Bradley Center and more recently Menno Place, was filled with kind care-givers who were so appreciated.

After suffering a stroke, Betty passed away in the early hours of September 22.

She was predeceased by her parents Harold and Melina Moore, Brother Dave Moore in 2012, brother-in-law George Stewart and her husband Jim.

She is survived by her loving sons Ted (Janet) Young, and Bob Young, sister Margaret Stewart, sister-in-law Bev Moore, niece Julie (Glen) Rogers, nephew Gary (Cathy) Moore, grandchildren Jody(Kris) Friesen and Jennifer(Derek) Gessner, and many beautiful grandchildren.

We will forever be grateful to have had her as our mother, aunt, sister and sister-in-law, grandmother, and most of all; friend.

An afternoon tea for family and friends will be held on October 28, 2017 from 12-3:00 at the Clubhouse building located at 9055 Ashwell Rd. Chilliwack, BC.

Flowers gratefully declined.
