UPDATE: BC Coroners Service identifies man fatally struck by train in Chilliwack

A 25-year-old Saskatchewan man is dead after reportedly trying to out run a train in downtown Chilliwack Friday evening.

Robert Jonathan Beaudry, a 25-year-old man from Regina, Saskatchewan, was identified by the BC Coroners Service Monday as the victim who was fatally struck by a train in Chilliwack Friday night.

"At about 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, Mr. Beaudry was traveling with friends in a taxi which had stopped at a railway crossing at Young Road in Chilliwack to allow an oncoming, westbound CN train to pass," Barb McClintock, at the Coroners Service, said in a statement.

"Mr. Beaudry exited the taxi and was struck by the train as he attempted to cross the railway on foot," she said.

The Coroners Service continues to investigate the incident.

McClintock said Beaudry's family has been notified, and on behalf of the family the Coroners Service is asking that the media to "respect their privacy at this difficult time."

"The BC Coroners Service expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Beaudry," she said.
