A vase of flowers and three hand-written notes make for a memorial for Darcy Garnot who was the victim of a hit-and-run on First Avenue east of Nowell Street on Sunday evening.

A 60-year-old Chilliwack man has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit-and-run Sunday night on First Avenue.

Gary Allain was arrested the next morning and is charged with criminal negligence causing death and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Police said the victim and suspect did not know each other.

"Darcy Garnot was walking with his girlfriend on the sidewalk east along First Avenue near Nowell Street when a vehicle drove up and struck him from behind," RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said in a Wednesday news release.

"Darcy was transported by Emergency Health Services to the Chilliwack General Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries," she said.

The suspect driver fled the scene, but police seized a black pickup truck the next day at a nearby apartment building.

Police are still looking for witnesses to this incident and anyone with information is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

"This is a tragic loss of life and our thoughts are with Darcy's family and friends,"  Hollingsworth said.
