Nearly a dozen purses snatched in Chilliwack 'smash-and-grab'

Police say a lone bike rider was seen pedaling away from the scene of a store break-in in downtown Chilliwack early Wednesday.

The sound of breaking glass followed by a man pedaling down a downtown Chilliwack street early Wednesday morning signalled a store break-in that netted several hundred dollars worth of merchandise.

"These kinds of crimes can cost business owners hundreds of dollars in repairs and replacing their stolen merchandise," RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.

"We want to encourage anyone with information to contact us," she said.

Police were called to Mary's Uniform and Fashions at 45934 Wellington St. at about 5:10 a.m.

A witness reported hearing a loud crash and seeing a man wearing a red hooded sweat shirt riding a bicycle out of the area. The suspect was described as about 5'8" tall and wearing blue jeans.

Nearly a dozen purses, in various colours and styles, were stolen in the break-in.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
