Man arrested in Chilliwack was wanted for ramming police car in Abbotsford

Travis Bragg now faces more charges after dramatic takedown on March 2

A man arrested in a dramatic takedown in Chilliwack on Monday night is the same one who was wanted for ramming a police car in Abbotsford in January, police have confirmed.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) stated on its Facebook page on Tuesday that Travis Nigel Bragg, 25, was arrested on Monday night, but no further details were provided.

However, in the comments section of the post, the APD later confirmed that Bragg is the man connected to the Chilliwack arrest.

The APD had issued a notice on Feb. 18, asking for the public’s help to locate Bragg.

At the time, they said he was wanted for an incident that occurred on Jan. 23. On that day, police had been patrolling Hillcrest Avenue in Abbotsford when they recognized a dark Ford F-150 parked in a backyard.

It was believed that the truck had been involved in a theft earlier the same day. Officers saw the vehicle drive away from the property, but when they attempted to pull the driver over, he revved the engine, rammed an oncoming police car and sped away.

Bragg was wanted on charges of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous operation of a vehicle, fleeing from a peace officer, and possessing stolen property (licence plates).

At the time of the alleged incident, Bragg was subject to court conditions that included house arrest and a driving ban.

On Tuesday afternoon, a press release was issued indicating that a man had been arrested in Chilliwack on Monday night. The man’s name was not provided.

The release said the Chilliwack RCMP and the APD had tracked down a wanted man at an apartment building in the 9200 block of Mary Street.

While officers were stationed outside the building, the man allegedly fled from one balcony and broke into a second unit, police said.

He was then tracked to a third-floor balcony, where a police dog was deployed. Police said the man assaulted the dog, and there was an altercation between him and the arresting officers, resulting in shots being fired from a “less lethal” shotgun.

The man, who had been struck by the beanbag rounds, was arrested on a first-floor balcony after reportedly jumping from the third floor, the release said.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is now investigating the matter to determine whether police actions – or inactions – are linked to the man’s injuries.

Charges for the incident in Chilliwack have not yet been laid against Bragg, but he was already facing charges there from last September of resisting a peace officer, possessing a break-in instrument and breaching his probation. His trial on those charges is set for June 19.

According to the provincial court database, Bragg has numerous prior convictions, which include possession of stolen property, uttering threats, theft, breaching his conditions, mail theft, and driving while prohibited.
