The first tentative steps toward the greening of Mill Street, and the creation of a more pedestrian friendly space in downtown Chilliwack are being taken.
A request for quotations went out from the City of Chilliwack for engineering firms to submit a technical field survey and plan preparation documents, with the closing date of July 4, city staff confirmed.
It's a follow-up item stemming from the sweeping Downtown Area Plan, which maps out areas for improvement and redevelopment over a 30-year span, with the aim of making the core more attractive, livable and responsive to growth.
The greening of Mill Street and other improvements are expected to continue later with a call for design concepts and consultations with affected parties like merchants and the Downtown BIA.
The area in question includes part of Wellington Avenue and Victoria Avenue, and the entire length of Mill Street.
Downtown landscaping beds filled with plants and flowers were installed along Wellington and Yale Road East last year, and this new vision for Mill Street is an expansion of that earlier joint effort by the city with funding assistance from the BIA and CEPCO.
