A dilapidated mobile home was gutted by fire Friday morning on a rural property on Chilliwack Central Road near East Chilliwack elementary school.

Chilliwack Fire Department crews from halls 1, 2, 4 and 6 arrived on the scene of the fire around 9 a.m. in the 49000 block of Chilliwack Central to a fully-engulfed mobile home.

Heavy smoke and flames were venting from the run-down trailer. Crews established a defensive attack, according to assistant chief Chris Wilson, and were successful protecting the nearby barn.

Firefighters quickly had it under control and no other nearby structures were threatened.

One man who lives next door said the resident living in the unit was seen burning garbage behind the run-down trailer Thursday night.

No one was home at the time of the fire, the fire department reported. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

There was no word immediately on the cause of the fire but it is under investigation.
