In light of the recent horrific school shooting in Florida, Chilliwack residents might be alarmed to see a local high school cordoned off and crawling with emergency responders.

But don’t worry, it’s just an exercise.

The RCMP is alerting the public of an emergency first responder training exercise taking place Saturday (Feb. 24) morning at Sardis secondary school on Stevenson Road.

The adjacent city-owned recreational area will remain open.

The exercise is being held to provide first responders a venue to practice and refine their team skills in the event of an emergency.

“The property of Sardis Senior Secondary School will be cordoned off by police for security and safety reasons during the exercise,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail said in a statement issued Tuesday. “The City of Chilliwack recreational area behind the school will remain accessible to the public from South Sumas Road the public.”
