Tories dial up 'telephone townhall' in Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon

After missing an all-candidates meeting last week in Hope, and bowing out of a similar meeting with UFV students in Chilliwack this week, Conservative candidate Mark Strahl is launching a "telephone townhall" Wednesday evening.

"We have a full campaign schedule that, unfortunately, doesn't allow us to attend everything we're invited to," Strahl's campaign manager Matthew Barker said Monday.

"You only have 30 days to reach over 80,000 people in a riding that covers 30,000 square kilometres," he said.

Barker said Strahl had to miss the Hope all-candidates meeting April 12 because he was already committed to speaking in Pemberton, and he had to turn down the UFV students' invitation on April 19 for similar reasons.

But on Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m., a telephone call will go out from the Strahl campaign to 35,000 households in the riding, so voters can ask the candidate direct questions, take part in a survey, or just listen.

"It has the feeling of live radio," Barker said, about the new technology.

"It's a great way to get in touch with constituents," he said, and it has the potential to bring together residents in all parts of the riding.

However, Barker added that Strahl will still be taking part in the "more traditional" all-candidates meetings in Chilliwack at the Probus Club on April 19 and the Chamber of Commerce on April 21.
