Chilliwack Search and Rescue is looking for a few new recruits in 2020.

A recruitment information session is being held Jan. 25 at Chilliwack city hall for one of the busiest search and rescue teams in B.C.

“Come and meet a few of our team members, see some of the equipment we use, ask your questions and find out if this might be a fit for you,” according to their Facebook post.

CSAR can be called in for helicopter rope rescues, avalanche response, and swift-water calls, as well as ground searches for missing hikers, or seniors.

The team’s territory covers 1,110 square kilometres over a range of recreational and back country areas, including the Chilliwack-Vedder and Fraser River systems.

They respond to about 80 calls a year, and that number is increasing.

“To learn more about the team, what we do and what we’re looking for (skills, experience, availability etc.) in potential candidates, please attend our info session January 25, 2020 at City Hall,” according to the CSAR post on Facebook.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. with the presentation taking place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 8550 Young Road, Chilliwack. Applications will be available immediately following the event.

Candidates must be 19 years of age or older to apply, live and/or work in Chilliwack, and be prepared to commit 300 hours a year (or more) to training, tasks and SAR activities.

The ideal SAR candidate is physically fit with lots of time to devote. They would be able to drop everything and go, if paged to assist. SAR tends to attract folks who know the local mountains and trail system very well.
