Chilliwack has eye on rising waters

The City of Chilliwack is not anticipating any problems from an expected surge in the Fraser River this weekend.

The City of Chilliwack is not anticipating any problems from an expected surge in the Fraser River this weekend.

Earlier Friday, the provincial River Forecast Centre issued flood watches and warnings for the upper Fraser River and the upper Columbian-North Thompson following days of heavy rain.

That water, which caused isolated flooding in Prince George, is expected to reach the lower Fraser sometime Sunday.

In a statement released Friday, the City of Chilliwack said the expected amounts are similar to peak flows last year.

“The River Forecast Centre expects a peak flow at Hope of 9,500 to 10,000 cubic metres per second to occur late Sunday, June 10, or early Monday, June 11,” the statement said. “ The expected flows are similar to the flows that occurred last year (last year’s peak flow at Hope was 10,100 cubic metres per second).”
