A mother cat and four of her kittens are being cared for by the Chilliwack SPCA Branch after being rescued from a fire that destroyed a Maitland Avenue home in Chilliwack on Monday. The couple renting the home escaped the fire, but the mother cat and two of the four kittens are being treated for burns sustained in the fire.
“We found the mom and three of the four-week-old kittens hiding in a cedar hedge outside the burned home on Monday,” says SPCA manager Angela Fleming. “We were called to the scene again on Tuesday after a fire inspector heard a kitten crying and we located the missing kitten in the flooded basement of the burned home. The kitten had serious burns over the majority of its body, including its ears, face and paw pads.”
The family has surrendered the cat and kittens to the SPCA and the animals are receiving on-going veterinary care for their injuries at Family Pet Hospital in Chilliwack. One adult cat, believed to be locked in a bedroom during the fire, is still missing.
