Bike helmet saves scooter kid’s life: RCMP

A bike helmet saved the life of a 10-year-old who scootered out of his driveway and into traffic in the Promontory area late Monday.

CHILLIWACK – A bike helmet saved the life of a 10-year-old who scootered out of his Promontory driveway into traffic late Monday, police say.

“There is no doubt that his choice to wear his helmet that day saved his life,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.

“He received an injury to his head that could have easily been fatal, if not for his helmet,” she said.

Police were responded to reports that a child had been hit by a vehicle at about 6 p.m.

But upon arrival Wolbeck said the officers discovered the youngster was riding his scooter down the driveway of a condo complex when he entered the roadway and struck the side of a (moving) vehicle.

Police are reminding parents not to place too much faith in helmets, which won’t offer much protection if not properly fitted.

“A helmet that does not fit will not absorb the impact of a hit or a fall and could case serious injuries,” police said in a news release.

“Please ensured that children not only have a helmet to wear, but that the helmet fits properly on their head.”

Parents should also make sure their children are aware of the dangers and risks associated with riding their bikes, skateboard and scooters near traffic.
