Dog shot as RCMP raid house

Chilliwack RCMP were forced to defend themselves against an aggressive dog while executing a search warrant Wednesday night.

The RCMP's Drug Section went into a house in the 46000 block of 3rd Avenue at 10 p.m., looking for evidence of drug activity.

A police service dog, Koda, and his handler were part of the search. As they moved through the house, a pit-bull terrier charged at them. A general duty officer shot the pit-bull, injuring but not killing the dog.

"The officer physically placed himself between the pit bull, Koda, and his handler in order to protect them from this threat," said RCMP Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. "Shooting an animal is not something we ever want to do, however, the protection of the public and our officers was the priority in this situation, and is in every situation."

The pit-bull was able to run off and was found several blocks away.

It was taken to a local veterinarian hospital for treatment and Chilliwack Animal Control is now looking after the dog.

Meanwhile, the search resulted in the seizure of substances that the RCMP believes to be heroin and crystal methamphetamine. Thirty-seven-year-old Chilliwack native Kane Wilson has been charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a prohibited weapon.
