Pedestrian escapes serious injury as vehicle crashes into Chilliwack building
The driver of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian before smashing into a downtown building will face impaired driving charges, Chilliwack RCMP say.
The incident occurred in the 9200 block of Kipp Avenue at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday morning.
Police say the vehicle, a red Mazda Miata, did about $20,000 of damage to the building; the pedestrian was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver attempted to leave the scene of the collision, but was apprehended and detained by witnesses until police arrival. A 49-year-old Chilliwack man was taken into custody for an impaired investigation as alcohol was believed to be a factor. A charge of Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle is being forwarded and the driver will appear in court at a future date.
“ We are fortunate that no one was seriously hurt in this incident” said Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “This should serve as a reminder that impaired driving is still very much a public safety concern with very dire consequences.”
