Party in Park pared down for 2014
Downtown Chilliwack BIA is gearing up for some major changes to the Party in the Park schedule for 2014.
The plan is to hold the hugely popular community event on four dates this year rather than eight as in the past.
Turns out there were considerable challenges holding the event on eight consecutive Friday nights in July and August, so they're making it for four Friday nights over the busy summer months.
Some renewed focus will be on showcasing local artists on the entertainment stage, even if it may not necessarily be exclusive to Chilliwack acts," Williams said.
More activities for kids, a rejuvenated marketplace, and greater support from local shops are in the works.
Party in the Park 2014 will fill Central Community Park and downtown streets with community spirit on these dates: July 11, July 18, Aug. 15 and Aug. 22.
“Many volunteers, merchants, sponsors and organizing partners have had difficulty committing to the full summer,” said BIA executive director Kyle Williams, to explain the scheduling changes.
The dates would sometimes conflict with the Chilliwack Fair, or vacation times, and even the B.C. Day long weekend as examples, he said.
Party in the Park is heading into its eighth season for 2014, and the BIA has taken decisive action "to ensure that the popular family event will have another strong year," Williams said.
BIA officials collected suggestions from public surveys they conducted at the 2013 Party, and have used that information to make small adjustments for this summer.
“Some people want the event to be smaller and more intimate, while some want us to make it bigger with more activities.
"Many want local talent, but others have asked us to bring in larger headline acts.
"We love that there is so much passion for the event in Chilliwack, and we just need to find a way to balance all the great ideas and suggestions that have been collected."
One way or another it is going to be fun, added Williams.
