RCMP say break-in suspect caught 'red-handed'
Chilliwack RCMP say they caught a break-in suspect red-handed Tuesday who may be responsible for a string of earlier home break-ins.
Const. Tracy Wolbeck said police were watching the 33-year-old suspect based on his suspected involvement in those earlier break-ins in the Chilliwack area.
She said during the evening hours of April 17, police officers "watched the man ride his bike to the Fairfield Island area where he was observed going into a driveway on Fairview Drive."
"The suspect entered a carport of one residence, and broke into an adjoining storage room where he stole a variety of frozen meat and frozen foods from a freezer, along with a carton of beer," she said.
As the suspect left the area on his bike, he was stopped and arrested, stolen property in hand, she said.
Matthew Kerr is charged with break-and-enter and breach of probation. He was remanded in custody until his next court date April 23.
Const. Bryan Martell, with the Chilliwack RCMP's crime reduction unit, said home break-ins "affect people on a personal level and jeopardize the safety and security one should feel in their own home."
"The Chilliwack RCMP continue to work diligently to combat this pervasive issue and bring to justice those responsible," he said.
