Former Chilliwack MP Strahl named Trudeau mentor

Former MP Chuck Strahl has been named a mentor to promising scholars by the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation.

Strahl, who was the MP in Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon for 16 years and held three cabinet portfolios, is among 10 mentors announced by the Trudeau Foundation.

"In addition to sharing their extensive knowledge and experience, the Trudeau mentors will help accelerate (their) careers by introducing them to valuable professional and social networks," Pierre-Gerlier Forest, Foundation president, said in a news release.

Strahl was not immediately available for comment.

Cindy Blackstock, a member of the Gitksan Nation in B.C., and Paul Kariya, a former director of DFO's aboriginal fisheries, are among the 10 mentors named for 2012.

The other mentors are: Elizabeth Beale, Phillippe Couillard, Len Crispino, Frances Lankin, Daniel Lessard, Bernard Richard, and John Sims.

For their 18-month term, the mentors are offered a $20,000 honorarium, and a further $15,000 is available to cover the cost of participating in program activities.

The Trudeau Foundation was started in 2001 as a memorial to the late prime minister, and was endowed by the Canadian government the next year with $125 million, unanimously supported by the House of Commons.
