Mail theft in Chilliwack: A Christmas trend
Chilliwack RCMP are warning residents to keep an eye on mailboxes as the Christmas season arrives.
Two separate incidents of theft of mail were reported in Chilliwack over the past weekend. The mailboxes had been pried open, and mail stolen.
"Unfortunately, this is not uncommon at this time of year," RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said in a news release. "Thieves are breaking into mailboxes looking for cards or envelopes containing money that has been sent as a Christmas gift."
"It's really sad that we need to warn people of this happening in our area, but it's a necessity," she said.
Some police tips for keeping your mail safe:
- Check and empty your mailbox daily;
- Avoid leaving mail in your mailbox for long periods of time;
- Avoid sending money in the mail;
- Alert police to any suspicious activity around mailboxes.
