Choosing the right place to call home is a big decision, no matter what stage of life you are at.

After all, everyone needs to feel like they’re a part of their community and that they’re making meaningful connections with those around them.

At the same time, finding and fostering connection can be difficult when everyone around you is busy and at a different stage of their lives, and for many seniors, feelings of isolation and loneliness are all too real – feelings that can be detrimental to health and wellbeing.

Shared values

Elim Village’s Garrison Crossing offers seniors a unique place to call home with others of like-mind, sharing similar values in a place where community and all the benefits of companionship come together to make genuine, personal connections. The community spirit fostered at Elim Village’s Garrison Crossing is a real-world example of the vital roles emotional, social and spiritual wellness play in supporting the whole person.

“I like the concept of being amongst seniors because people have a little more time to interact,” says Elim Village resident Barb. “I like to walk out in the hallway and feel a part of the whole community.”

Community activities

Programs to build community and create connections at Garrison Crossing include well-attended coffee socials and walking groups that foster lively conversations and close friendships. Faith-based activities can be an important part of many people’s lives, and Elim offers optional hymn sings and Bible study groups.

Activities ranging from outdoor excursions to sit-down games promote shared interests. There’s even a campus newsletter initiated by residents that helps to create a sense of belonging by sharing resident stories and promoting community-planned events. Sharing an interest like playing in the ukulele group or joining in a friendly game of horseshoes can foster friendship and camaraderie. Participating in an event such as a a drive for the local food bank develops relationships with the larger Chilliwack community and allows many to live out their values of helping and giving back.

From a friendly game of horseshoes to a walk along the nearby Vedder River, there is always something to do at Elim Village Garrison Crossing!
