After years of trials and tribulations, the Chilliwack Crusaders Rugby Club find themselves on the cusp of completing the ultimate turnaround.

The Crusaders have secured a spot in the quarter-final of this year’s Men’s Division 3 playoffs. The playoff appearance is the Crusaders’ second straight following a loss in the semi-final last season.

The early spring games are a welcomed feat for a club that has admittedly endured some tough seasons in years past.

“Victories were scarce and losses were all too familiar,” said Crusader Tyrone Brown. “There were times we faced defeat after defeat.”

Brown, who spent the early years of his paying career in Ontario and Alberta, is one of the Crusaders’ newest members. This past season marks his first as a part of the club.

“To find myself back in the thick of the action, contributing to a playoff-bound team, feels nothing short of incredible,” said Brown.

“Many players spend their entire careers chasing this elusive playoff opportunity, making this moment all the more precious to me.”

It’s been a long road back for the Crusaders – their last championship coming back in 2008 – who have collected multiple winless seasons throughout their drought. Last year marked the club’s first appearance in the playoffs since 2015, with the team being defeated by the Comox Valley Kickers in the 2023 semi-final.

The club built off of last year’s success with their 22-16 victory over United Rugby Club cementing the team’s 11-1 regular season record – the best the club has ever boasted – en route to their second straight postseason appearance.

The Crusaders will take on the Brit Lions at 12:45 p.m. this Saturday, April 20, at Yarrow Sports Field, at 3635 Savoy Road in Chilliwack.
