It was a difficult and busy weekend for Chilliwack RCMP with officers responding to more than 371 calls for service from April 19 to April 22.
There were collisions, including a fatal, assaults, break-and-enter reports, according to the release (April 23) from RCMP Cpl. Carmen Kiener, media relations officer for Chilliwack RCMP.
Two of the files were for vehicle crashes, both reported to police at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, (April 20).
RCMP received a crash notification from an iPhone after a driver lost control and hit a tree near Rosedale. Police found a female driver at the scene who showed signs of impairment.
“The driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving, and the investigation is ongoing. No other vehicle was involved in this incident and thankfully no one hurt,” Kiener said.
The second crash was also a single-vehicle collision but it was on Ashwell Road and the vehicle crashed into a utility pole, and it snapped in two. The male driver in this incident also showed signs of impairment, and was arrested with a promise to appear at a later court date, the officer said.
The power went out at nearby residences. Crews from BC Hydro and Chilliwack Fire Department attended later to ensure the damaged pole was not a safety hazard.
A break-in-enter in progress was reported at a construction site on Riverside Drive at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
A man accessed the second floor of an apartment building after cutting a hole in the construction fence.
Police later arrested a man and a woman who were released upon a promise to appear in court.
“The investigation revealed evidence that copper wire was being cut and taken from inside the building.”
Store security at the downtown Save-On Foods reported being assaulted in the parking lot after trying to arrest a suspect for stealing ice cream.
“The loss prevention officer suffered minor injuries and as a result of the investigation, the male was released from custody and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
“The male is also bound by conditions to not attend the Save On Foods.”
