Celebrate Chilliwack/Vedder River on Sunday
The annual river celebration and cleanup of the Chilliwack/Vedder watershed is coming up on Sept. 30.
It's the third river cleanup event of the year organized by the Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Society, with registration this time at the Chilliwack Fish and Game club house on Chilliwack Lake Road.
"The Chilliwack/Vedder system is one of the most heavily used recreational rivers in B.C. by the numbers," said Chris Gadsden of the cleanup society.
The cleanup falls on World Rivers Day, with entertainment, displays and a fish casting game planned for participants.
At the last cleanup in July, 580 kilograms of garbage was collected at the Fish and Game site, while 400 kg came from the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, with 230 kg of wood waste.
The society has held 36 cleanups, and more than 5,000 volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to help, donating 20,952 volunteer hours to collect a whopping 76.75 tonnes of trash.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Fish and Game, with doughnuts and coffee for volunteers. A barbecue lunch is at noon, followed by a few speakers and draw prizes. Don't forget your gloves and boots.
