Cities should draw on the Bank of Canada

Clint Hames’ opinion piece “ Time to demand more from political candidates ,” really hit home with me. I think we should demand that the B.C. government finance our new infrastructure projects using money borrowed from the Bank of Canada.

The Bank of Canada is directed by the Canadian Constitution to provide loans to all levels of Canadian government for infrastructure. The really good part about this constitutional mandate is that the loans must be issued at zero per cent interest.

Our elected public servants have been financing infrastructure projects for many years using money borrowed from privately owned international banks, at the going rate of interest. This seems wasteful. I have been talking to our current provincial reps about this, but they will not bring the issue before the legislature. Now is a good time for voters to decide what should be done.

Zero per cent interest gets my vote every time. And we can take control of our finances away from the international banks. Let’s demand that any candidate or party that wants to represent the voters should get our money for free from the Bank of Canada.
