Canada Day dilemma

I’m having a bit of a dilemma wondering just how, or even if, I may want to recognize Canada Day this year. You see, I recently participated in a piece of devised theatre, as offered via the University of the Fraser Valley’s theatre department, that dealt with stories of truth and reconciliation. Through that process, I gained more knowledge about some of the truths regarding Canada’s aboriginal residential schools and the legacy of that injustice.

And now that I know some of those truths and am committed to learning more, I don’t feel I want to wave the Canadian flag as exuberantly as I used to. In particular, I’m hoping to find a more meaningful way of recognizing Canada Day and I think it has to do with an attempt to better understand and connect with my aboriginal neighbours.

I guess I’m extra conflicted because of it being the big 150 this year. A celebration like none other, in many people’s minds. It seems to be staring me in the face where ever I go. Yeah, Canada! Happy Birthday!

What should I do? Boycott Canada Day? Use it as an opportunity to raise awareness about a very negative part of our history and suffer, once again, the naysayers? The, “why can’t they get over it” crowd. Should I just go to the parade and games, like I’ve done in the past, and look to see if I see any brown faces celebrating? Or maybe, I’ll contact a First Nations community and ask if they are recognizing the day and if so would I be able to join them? Would I be welcome? Would it be appropriate for me to be there?

You see my dilemma?

About the only thing I know for sure is that I’m about to embark on a new to me kind of Canada Day – this year and in the years to come – and maybe that’s reason enough to celebrate!
