"Anvil!" nabs documentary group award

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," the well-reviewed film about a veteran Canadian rock band, did not make the short list for the documentary Oscar, but it has been named best music doc by the International Documentary Association.
The IDA on Monday announced winners in seven categories in advance of the organization's awards ceremony Friday in Los Angeles.
"Anvil!," director Sacha Gervasi's portrait of a heavy metal band, also is nominated for the IDA's top feature prize, which will be announced Friday.
PBS' "POV" series, produced by American Documentary, captured the group's Continuing Series Award. In the Limited Series category, the prize went to the Sundance Channel's "Architecture School," a six-part series from Michael Selditch and Stan Bertheaud that follows a group of students at Tulane's School of Architecture.
The IDA/Humanitas Award, a new prize that recognizes a film that strives to unify the human family, went to Mai Iskander's "Garbage Dreams," which centers on three teenage boys growing up on the outskirts of Cairo.
The IDA/Pare Lorentz Award went to Irene Taylor Brodsky's Oscar-nominated short "The Final Inch," about health workers in some of India's poorest neighborhoods. The IDA/ABC News VideoSource Award, for best use of archival news footage, was awarded to "Wounded Knee," an episode produced and directed by Stanley Nelson from the "We Shall Remain" series produced by WGBH with Native American Public Television.
The IDA is a nonprofit membership organization for nonfiction filmmakers.
