LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - HBO has acquired the U.S. TV rights to "Afghan Star," a feature documentary about four youngsters who risk everything to win a popular "American Idol"-style TV series in the war-torn nation.
The movie, currently in limited theatrical release through Zeitgeist Films, is slated to premiere on the cable network in early 2010. From filmmaker Havana Marking, it won the directing and audience awards at the Sundance Film Festival's World Cinema Documentary competition earlier this year.
