An opera will combine with real-time, motion-capture technology when a unique performance comes to Chilliwack.
‘Live from the Underworld’ is a collaboration of opera, dance, hip-hop and video game professionals and it’ll be at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Feb. 3.
This interactive performance which re-imagines the Greek tale of Eurydice is presented by theatre company re:Naissance Opera.
Using computer-generated sets and mythological avatars, the audience will experience a hybrid stage adaption of the story through real-time motion capture and projection. On stage, actors and singers will bring the avatars – which will be projected onto a screen behind them – to life. This cross-sector collaboration results in a genre-defying work that redefines opera for the modern age.
Synopsis:
Encountering the Underworld ferryman named Charon, Eurydice sets upon an adventure where she ultimately must decide if she will either reclaim her heritage or reconnect with the man she loves, Orpheus. Together, Eurydice and Charon journey through luminescent caverns, embellished by a musical backdrop that combines operatic singing with hip-hop beats.
Additionally, Live from the Underworld will also feature Eurydice Fragments – a trans story. Set in a steampunk queer bar called The Styx, Eurydice Fragments continue to show immersive and interactive technologies.
Live from the Underworld is coming to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Feb. 3 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $39 with discounts for those in the Patron Programs and can be purchased at the Centre Box Office, online at chilliwackculturalcentre.ca, or by calling 604-391-SHOW(7469).
