Whether it’s an angry but slightly gullible fire-breathing dragon, or a father-stealing team of vengeful fish, Robert Munsch’s stories have kept children laughing for the past four decades — and now they’re coming to life on stage in Chilliwack.

On May 7 Project X Theatre is bringing their production of Munsch Upon A Time to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, and for lovers of Munsch or first time readers, it’s sure to be the rattle-bing-bang-best time ever.

Munsch Upon A Time, created by Debbie Patterson, takes three of Munsch’s classic stories — The Paper Bag Princess, The Fire Station, and David’s Father — along with two of his newer tales — Give Me Back My Dad! and It’s My Room! — and stages them in the most hilarious way possible.

The show is produced by Kamloops-based theatre company Project X, and became a permanent addition to their repertoire after its run at last year’s X Fest, the company’s yearly theatre festival in Kamloops.

With eight performances in July alone, it didn’t take long for the show to become a fan favourite.

Its actors, Randi Edmundson as Patsy, Melissa Thomas as Fullerton, and Andrew Cooper as the Professor, kept audiences laughing with their modest, yet hilarious, take on Munsch’s beloved stories.

Project X didn’t start off as a family-orientated company, but after performing their first kid’s show in 2011, the group knew it was something they wanted to keep doing.

“The response from the community was so overwhelming it was clear that Project X was filling a void in our community’s cultural needs,” they said.

In the past seven years, the group has performed a variety of family-friendly productions, including The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, and their upcoming season includes The Jungle Book and Rapunzel.

Whether Munsch’s stories have become bedtime staples that have been nearly memorized, or if this is the first time hearing them, they’re sure to put a smile on every face, both the young and the young at heart.

Munsch Upon A Time is coming to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on May 7 at 2 p.m.

Tickets $10 and can be purchased at the Centre Box Office, online at www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca, or by calling 604-391-SHOW(7469).
