More than two dozen piano students, including five from Chilliwack, will be performing with a local orchestra for two evenings of music.

Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra’s annual Piano Extravaganza is set for Friday, May 17 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. There’s also a concert on May 24 in Vancouver.

The May 17 concert will feature 15 students (kids and adults) including Miles Graham, Easton Roy, Anna Wang, Madison Brecht and Janette Wood, all from Chilliwack.

There will be one piano on stage and each student will have their chance to play alongside members of the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra.

“From classical masterpieces to contemporary favourites, our talented pianists will captivate you with their artistry and passion,” orchestra director Paula DeWit stated in a press release.

It will also be the world premieres of two compositions: Kathleen Feenstra’s Sea of Tranquility, and Converge by student composer Vivian Kwok.

Roy and Brecht, former students of Chilliwack piano teacher Colleen Denoni, are both studying their bachelor of music at the University of Victoria under the direction of May Ling Kwok, while Wang and Wood are current students of Denoni. Graham studies under Clinton Denoni and he attends Unity Christian School.

The other students performing are from throughout the Lower Mainland and Victoria. A total of 15 students will perform on May 17 in Chilliwack, while 13 will take the stage on May 24 in Vancouver at Christ Church Cathedral.

DeWit is calling the concerts an “extraordinary celebration of music, where every note resonates with brilliance and emotion.”

Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra’s Piano Extravaganza is May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Tickets are $40 and available at the Centre Box Office, online at chilliwackculturalcentre.ca, or by calling 604-391-SHOW(7469).
