Garlic love this weekend in Chilliwack

Get ready for some serious garlic love this weekend in Chilliwack.

Garlic growers from near and far will be bringing their wares to Fantasy Farms for the Chilliwack Garlic and Music Festival Sept. 15-16.

Organizer Gary Moran likes to point out that if you grew four cloves of the same type of garlic in different parts of the province, you would be able to taste subtle regional differences in each one.

"That's because garlic pulls nutrients from the soil and the environment and it adapts according to what's in it."

This year's second garlic event promises to showcase some rare and unique varieties.

"We hope to see the attendance double this year," he said.

Almost 1,500 showed up the first year, and they're carefully growing the event year by year.

"If you want to stock up on excellent garlic, we will have some of the freshest in B.C. available right here," Moran said.

They've been busy this summer on Gibson Road, growing varieties from Russian Blue and Northern Quebec, to Yugoslavian and Chesnook Red.

Plus a dozen growers will be bringing their best harvest of what they call the "stinking rose."

Taste some garlic-inspired food from the Coast Chilliwack at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and then something from the Oasis on Sunday.

The Rockabilly Music Festival will see acts like Elvis Elite and the Lounge Hounds. Garlic lovers will see the return of the Family Fun Zone and a whopping 32 vendors will have products on display at the event, 9423 Gibson Road.

Partial proceeds go to Chilliwack Schools Garden Program.
