Cancer patients in Chilliwack may have access to rides to cancer treatments once again, if enough volunteers chip in their time.
The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society and the Chilliwack and District Seniors Resources Society are working together to expand the current patient transportation system to include Chilliwack.
To get the program rolling, they are going to need a dedicated roster of volunteer drivers organized. The service is provided for free to cancer patients, and volunteers are asked to volunteer either for two half days each week, or one full day.
Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to transport cancer patients to treatments and other cancer-related appointments in Abbotsford, Surrey or Vancouver. They are required to remain at the treatment centre and provide immediate transportation home again.
Drivers are eligible to receive a monthly vehicle cost reimbursement, and are required to have a minimum of $3-million liability insurance, among other requirements.
