Would you like to help plan the 2018 Chilliwack Fair?

With a growing fair and retiring directors, the Chilliwack Agricultural Society is seeking new members to join the Fair board.

The board is responsible for planning and hosting the Fair held each August at Heritage Park that attracts 38,000 people over the three-day event.

The Agricultural Society (Fair Board) is 146 years old, one of the oldest societies in B.C. and the second oldest Fair in the province.

The aim of the society is to celebrate local culture, heritage and agriculture and to include all aspects of the Chilliwack community. Of particular focus is showcasing local agriculture through the large 4-H show and open competitive shows. The Chilliwck Fair is the only fair in the Lower Mainland to still have competitive shows for dairy, sheep, poultry, miniature horse and light horse.

The Home and Garden competition is probably the largest in B.C. with over 1,700 entries this past year. And of course there is stage entertainment, free family activities, and lots of food all weekend.

“We are proud to have an event that is growing in scope and size, and feel that our strength comes from our volunteers and our partners in the community,” said acting fair board director Cathy Oss. “But some of our directors are retiring, and as we continue to grow, we need more help. The entire event is planned and hosted by the volunteer board and our committees with the help of our event co-ordinator. Depending on your area of interest, you could chose to help with planning entertainment, livestock shows, home and garden shows, work with volunteers, and more. We are particularly in need of a secretary and a volunteer co-ordinator.”

A potential director must live in Chilliwack or surrounding area, must be able to attend meetings on the fourth Thursday of each month and willing to serve on at least one committee, and should consider the good of the whole event ahead of one particular area.

Anyone interested or anyone with questions can email info@chilliwackfair.com or call Cathy Oss at 604-792-1313.
